A third grader in Cleveland was yanked from his family and stuffed into foster care (who get paid for taking in children, bu have no parental connection or bond) because the child was deemed 'obese', and was found to be suffering from sleep apnea.

The mom was called 'unfit' and acused of child neglect, despite seeking medical care for the child. She was ORDERED to participate in a weight loss program, and was actively seeking help, but was still considered unfit to be a mom.

There are some problems with this logic;

Mom is actively seeking medical help for her child, so how is this neglect?
While in foster care, the kid didn't improve, so he was returned to his family,
The act of ripping kids from their real families and placing them in a strangers home (something we are taught as kids is to be avoided) isn't considered to be harmful at all,
It does not appear that any kind of workup for genetic disposition to obesity was done prior to the state taking action.

For your consideration, follow the link above to Yahoo Sports and read about Emmanuel Marlow, the ballpark vendor who stepped in and saved a young boy's life, seeking no reward or recognition, and then simply went back to work selling beer to the crowd.

'Emmanuel' from Hebrew translates to 'God [is] with us' and He certainly was, since NO ONE was doing anything to save the boy until Emmanuel took action, probably due to fear of being sued for assault or injuring the child. We are all prisoners of our fears, but Mr. Marlow rose above it and did what needed to be done, without fear.

"You just never know when a similar situation will play out around you, or even involving someone you love. It's always better to be safe and prepared than to be sorry."

No-Kids-Allowed: Discrimination At Its Core

More and more, businesses are trying to exclude children (and by association, their parents - who have the spending money) from their establishments.

While on the surface, this may seem like a good idea, until you consider some facts; 1) everyone was a child once, 2) parents represent more of the populace than single adults, 3) there are certain laws that explicitly prohibit discrimination, and most specify that one may not exclude another based on AGE.

I am someone who used to have the 'You kids get off my lawn' attitude before I became a parent, but I never - NEVER - supported excluding children from lawful activities, such as those being restricted based on age in this Yahoo piece. Movie theatres, supermarkets, airlines are all on the list. My local theatre had an 'adults only' showing of 'Cars 2' that was on more screens at more times than the 'kid-friendly' shows.

What a bunch of whiny, self-centered, spoiled BRATS we've raised! No, I don't mean the kids excluded from the fun, I mean the ADULTS that won't share.

The company I work for has chosen to radically minimize expenses, and I have been given the chance to completely close my brick-and-mortar office and work from home full-time. This means that all my interactions between myself and colleagues, customers, vendors, contractors, takes place in my home studio/office/den/multipurpose room, over Skype or webcam.

On the upside there will be no more smoke signals - I have a no-burn ordinance in my neighborhood.

I already had an office at home, and it was a busy one. I take care of the home business, the charities I work for, the occasional voice-over work all from the comfort of the techno-cocoon the family calls 'the back office'. I even 'worked from home' a couple days a week in there as well.

While many would welcome such a work arrangement, I find it most unnerving. Besides having my professional hub of activity for the past decade shut down and stuffed into boxes in my garage, my 'home' i.e. 'back' office is very crowded now, surrounded on ALL sides by computer monitors of various sizes, where only 2 sides were covered before. It is also very hard to separate 'home' life from 'work' life, since they happen in the same space. Not to mention the dog barking at a cat outside while I'm in a teleconference spanning 3 continents. Lacks professionalism somehow.

Nonetheless, here I am, at work, yet on my blog, in sleep pants and a T-shirt, posting away as my son, now 10, stirs and wakes up in his room across the hall on his first official day of summer vacation. He's still at an age where he wants to spend time with me, but old enough to understand when dad is busy and needs to be left alone. For that I am blessed, to be able to spend the summer with him in this way really is a gift disguised as cost containment.

Now if the freakin' dog just had a clue, I could deal with it.

Father Shot By Teen Daughter For Taking Cell Phone

The girl was despondent, and grounded for bad behavior by her father, so she retreats to her room, gets out a hunting bow and shoots her father, landing a solid shot in his torso. She then goes to him, takes her cell phone back, and prevents dad from using it to call 911.

He crawls out a window, with the arrow still protruding from his body, makes his way to a car and drives 1/3 mile to use the neighbor's phone to call for help.

According to Det. William Adam, a S.W.A.T. team was sent into the forest to find the girl. She was taken into custody, originally headed for juvenile detention, but apparently is under medical care at this time.

Mom Is Injecting Poison Into Her Daughter's Face on ABC

Botox, short for 'Botulinum Toxin' is used in adults to mask wrinkles by effectively poisoning the nerves and muscles under the skin.

Kerry Campbell appeared on 'Good Morning America' to try and justify why she was personally taking needle in hand and shooting up her daughter Britney with Botox.

It is no surprise that once the San Francisco area Child Services agencies' call centers were flooded with calls that an 'investigation' was started. Read the article from SFGate HERE.

PC Rental Outfit Uses Webcams to Spy On Renters

Daily Tech is reporting that Aaron's used images taken from customer's webcams on PCs they had rented AND PAID OFF IN FULL. A class-action suit is likely to come.

According to the report, Crystal and Brian Byrd of Wyoming had completed their rent-to-own contract, but due to some 'clerical error', the rental outift came to their home, armed with pics taken with the webcam on the laptop they had recently paid off, presumably 'evidence' to the ownership of the machine.

The Byrds, in their statement to the AP, said that their main concern was for the safety of their family. They have small children, and if Aaron's had decided to snap a pic while their kids were getting out of the tub, that could be construed as child porn.

My concern is this: IF the software used to 'spy' on the Byrd's is found to be legal, when does it get de-activated? The software used also logs keystrokes as well, so is Aaron's intending to monitor the customer's web habits as a form of 'leverage'?

BUYER BEWARE! I would suggest that if you buy a PC with a webcam, better wipe the hard disk clean before you use it!

Undercover Survey: Mature Rated Games Hard To Buy

According to cnet.com's blogger Don Reisinger, the stats show that video games rated mature or higher are 'hard' to buy, with 13% of teenagers who were not age-appropriate being able to score the title anyway.

THAT IS NOT HARD TO BUY!! THAT IS EPIC FAIL!!

If any other corporation, regulatory body, or government agency stood up and said, "Hey, only 13% got through - that's a win!" they would be hauled before Congress to answer for themselves!

Breast Milk Ice Cream Pulled from UK Store: NPR

'Baby Gaga' is the name of a new ice cream flavor that went on sale in London last week - and was pulled from stock this week - amid fears of passing on viruses, such as Hepatitis, to the general public.

There is a sign up on the store window of 'The Icecreamist' shop in London, stating that they're sold out. NPR reports that the Westminster Council ordered the product pulled for screening and testing.

The ice cream is made from breast milk obtained from a pool of 15 women responding to an internet ad, flavored with vanilla and a bit of lemon zest.

Ironically, it was two men who complained about the ice cream being available. The store founder was quoted saying "It's pure, it's natural, it's organic, and it's free range — and if it's good enough for our kids, it's good enough to use in our ice cream."

Who can argue with that logic?

Adolf Hitler Campbell: Part Zwei

It seems the second jack boot has dropped in the tale of a boy whose parents just wanted to buy a birthday cake with his name on it. (refer to the blog post from Jan 14, 2009 for background).

Little Adolf Hitler Campbell, along with his sisters, JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell, will not be returning to their parents by order of the State of New Jersey. The ruling comes over a year after authorities removed the children, at the time citing the names as cause. In fact, the State had to go looking for a reason to keep the kids; the Family Court found no cause to remove them (other than the names, I suspect). But yet the kids stayed in 'protective custody' while the search for a better reason continued.

The State has back-peddled a bit, now denying the names were the reason for revoking parental rights, and disclosing a few more dark details;
1) Unemployed parents who were abused,
2) 'Untreated' psychological problems (both mom and dad),
3) A father who can't read or write,
4) A mother who quit school in the 10th grade,
5) Adolf's vocabulary - at age 4 he can make sailors blush,
6) Accusations of abuse by the dad, Heath, who according to this ABC piece has been married twice before, with one ex-spouse moving away for her own protection.

The Campbells also have some interesting home decorating ideas, choosing swords and skulls over lace doilies and cut flowers.

I think the State was justified to remove these kids from their parents in light of the new details. As dire as the state has made this all out to be, its just amazing that the Campbells managed to survive day-to-day. But to me, if the state is going to use employment status, level of education and/or mental health issues as justification for removing kids from their parents, there may be no home in New Jersey left unchallenged, including the foster homes where these kids will wind up.

NY Times: Kid Busted For Bringing Utensils To School

A 6-year-old boy was suspended, sent to 'reform school' for 45 days as if he were some sort of drug dealer or gang-banger.

In point of fact, his sole criminal offense was bringing a Cub Scout utensil set to school, perhaps similar to the one pictured, and he was 'sentenced' under a 'zero-tolerance' policy for weapons possession.

Interesting thing, though: The mutli-utensil kit he's holding in the photo accompanying the NYTimes article doesn't appear on the official scoutstuff website.

I don't have a problem with a kid getting in trouble for having a knife on school grounds, but is a SPORK really a threat? And why have we thrown out all responsibility by adopting 'zero tolerance' policies? Don't we have school administrators to make decisions based on facts, circumstances, and 'priors'?

Chad Love at Field and Stream sums up the situation far better than I;

That's not garden-variety school administration stupidity. Nope, that kind of cosmic dumbassery occupies a temporal plane of ineptitude and lack of reason so profound a Zen master could spend a lifetime meditating upon its philosophical consequences. It's that stupid.

Amen.

Personally, I have ZERO TOLERANCE for ZERO TOLERANCE policies! The kid has been sentenced without a trial and has been scarred for life by this. Mom is home-schooling the boy for now.

I for one say "You Go, Mom!" These administrators clearly can't be trusted to look out for your son's best interests. Probably best for Zachary if he stays out of that school!

Mom set up a website, helpzachary.com, but it appears to have been crushed, either by the sensational amount of traffic generated by this outrage, or by threat of lawsuit by the school officials embarrassed by this debacle.

What's In A Name: Adolf Hitler Campbell?

It seems the Campbell family in Holland Township, NJ chose their kids' names very poorly, for the following reasons;

(1) They cannot get a personalized birthday cake for their son Adolf at the local supermarket, (msnbc link) and
(2) It appears that the kids have been taken from their parents by the state Division of Youth and Family Services for the "Nazi cannotations" their names carry (msnbc link).

I for one think little Adolf's parents are idiots - cruel idiots - to tag their precious son with a name like "Adolf Hitler Campbell," knowing full well the historical baggage a name like that pulls with it. And little "JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell" is going to have some steep hills to climb in her future with that moniker, as is her sister, "Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell."

Lapses in name selection judgement aside, I think there'd better be more to the story of these kids being removed from their home than their strange names alone. Otherwise, kids like the little boy living down the street from my folks, 'Wolfenstein Lawrence Gibson," runs a risk of winding up in state custody.

At least Heath and Deborah Campbell have probably managed to secure unique user names on Facebook, MySpace and RocketMail for their children.

Yesterday, while the rest of us were wondering where to go to celebrate Friday, a brave little girl said goodbye to her mom and sister, and left this world for one much better.

I know its better, because she is there, and leukemia is not.

The beautiful ramblings of a family friend describe it far better than I can...but I warn you...it is moving, wonderful and painful to read, and I thank its author for sharing that moment.

Baby wipes do NOT wipe away tears. I tried. I wish they were a magical cure for cancer, but they aren't.

After a rough afternoon at the pediatrician, there's nothing more heartwarming than to see your kid - finally - resting comfortably. And right there beside him is his bestest buddy, Ben, watching over him.

Poor kid. The throat culture tested positive. When I was a kid, the lab results from one of those long gag-reflex invoking cotton swabs took 2 weeks or longer to come back. You were over the disease before you found out what it was! Now they have a test, very similar to those home baby-making test kits, complete with the little blue bar and little pink bar. Just wait 10 minutes and pink bar = strep.

After this experience I could use a trip to a bar.

The throat culture was a new experience for Evan. The nurse was a pro at administering the procedure, but the little food that remained in his stomach decided it wanted to see the pediatrician, too. The wipes came to the rescue again, as they can clean faces, waiting room furniture, and those stylish wing tips that I'm subsidizing with my co-pay.

Am I being over-sensitive to the marketing tactics employed by the mega-red-retailer whose name is synonymous with concentric circles at the end of a pistol range, or is this just plain WRONG?

I was in my local red-themed store and found the piggy banks next to the one-armed bandits. Am I the only bozo on the bus who thinks this is a BAD IDEA?

I know, I know. The slot machine 'toys' are, in fact, banks. But what message is this sending to the kids? Is it telegraphing by reference that gambling is saving?

Just askin'...

...But DON'T GET ME STARTED on those Barbie checkout toys, complete with fake magnetic-stripe credit card!

Special Guest Interview: Karl Hindle

Karl's baby girl Emily vanished, along with the girl's mother, who took Emily in January 2003. Since then, Karl has been trying to find little Emily Rose Hindle, pictured here. She has been moved by her mother at least 40 times, through 10 U.S. States.

Karl has spent over 3 years searching for Emily, and he has sold everything he owns to try and get Emily back.

She is going blind. If Emily isn't found soon, and given medical attention for a serious eye problem, the damage will be irreversible.

Karl's search for Emily is a story of international child abudction, a U.S. State Department cover-up, and involvement of a known sex offender in a plot to illegally adopt Emily.

For those of you following along...

My friend and investment wizard, Matthew, advised me to reduce my domestic (i.e. USA) investments due to his interpretation of upcoming market instability. He advised me to pull out 30% of my domestic holdings and move the capital into my money market fund. He also said that there may be more moves in the near future, now that the 'Ides of March' are upon us.

Remember: Neither he nor I are professional investment people, and I'm just passing on what he told me 'over a beer' so to speak. Matthew watches the markets with an amazing analytical mind, and great enthusiasm...so when he says "pull out of the market", I say "yes sir - how much!"

Dow Breaks Glass Ceiling, goes Above 11,000

I've mentioned my good friend, Matthew Brown, my personal investment guru on the daddycast. He somehow found a way to slip me a note (well, an IM actually) while teaching students in Taiwan the basics of English idioms, like "I caught wind of a move in the stock market".

His students were baffled. They thought he was complaining of a bad smell on the farm, perhaps caused by flatulent cattle.

He was referring, of course, to the new high water mark the DJIA hit in today's trading. Its the first time the Dow Jones Industrial Average has been at this mark since before 9/11...good luck finding this on the front pages of any newspapers, though. But Matt had predicted this on Episode 120, and sure enough, 2 weeks later, here we are, above 11,000.

Matthew sent me a note to advise me to move all my available capital (i.e. cash or money market funds, which I could transfer without penalties or fees) into the domestic mutual funds I have in my portfolio. I have 5 of those. Their trading symbols are HMVMX, VIIIX, DRLCX, OTCFX and VIEIX. I don't make money selling these, I just buy 'em through my employer's 401(k) plan.

If you've been listening to the podcast regularly, you already know that Matt and I talk about our investments "over a beer" as it were, and I promised to keep you, the listeners informed as we moved money into and out of these funds. Well, we're all in! every penny of available capital in my investment portfolio is now "in play", and has been spread across these 5 funds equally, 20% in each.

The market can change very quickly, and the idea Matt uses is to preserve gains and minimize losses. Sounds like a simple plan, but timing is important. He watches where the money is going and follows it, pushing money into funds during up trends and pulling money out of funds during down trends. We're in an upward swing now...let's see how far up we can go!

So, for those of you thinking of establishing an investment fund for a college education for your kids, now would be a good time.
